Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by a bacterium (*Treponema pallidum*) that spreads through contact with sores during unprotected sex.
Symptoms can include painless sores, rashes, and flu-like symptoms.
Syphilis affects sexually active individuals of all genders. However, pregnant women and their babies face a higher risk. If a pregnant woman has syphilis, she can transmit the infection to her baby (congenital syphilis). Congenital syphilis can be prevented through timely detection and treatment of syphilis in the pregnant woman.
It is an easily preventable and treatable disease.
Correct and consistent condom use significantly reduces the risk of infection.
