Since 2011, November 17 has been recognized as the World Prematurity Day in order to give visibility to this problem, raise awareness of the needs and rights of premature babies and their families, sensitize decision makers, health teams and the whole society about the importance of experience and quality care, to advance policies that guarantee the full rights of both babies and families.

In 2024, the right of premature babies to receive the best care in their transition from hospital to home and to access specialized monitoring that, equitably, responds to the specific needs of each one, is highlighted.

The presence of mothers and fathers with their baby, skin-to-skin contact and breastfeeding is key to achieving the maximum development potential of boys and girls. In addition, it positions caregivers in their leading role in the care of their sons and daughters, which begins during hospitalization and continues after hospital discharge.

After transfer to home, the problems of premature newborns are not completely resolved; they need follow-up that goes beyond postnatal hospital care. Therefore, health teams must guide families through every step of the process, providing accessible information and support.

Proper information and monitoring can save lives. The support of health teams is essential so that families can identify warning signs in time and to achieve the maximum development potential of their babies.
