Vaccines: why do some people resist them?

There is evidence about aspects that influence the population's acceptance of vaccines. These should be strategically considered by members of the health team and by those who manage resources for vaccination campaigns.
These aspects include:
Trust: In the efficacy and safety of vaccines and in the delivery system.
Indifference: Some people have a low perception of the risk of vaccine-preventable diseases, leading them to believe immunization is unnecessary. Indifference may be determined by underestimation of their benefit (efficacy or safety) or by knowledge gaps.
Convenience: The (real or perceived) quality and degree to which vaccination services are provided at a time, place and in a manner considered attractive, affordable, convenient and comfortable influences the decision to vaccinate or not. The priority that each person assigns to vaccination determines their indifference and perceived convenience in accessing it.
Reluctance: People may be reluctant to receive specific vaccines, or vaccination in general. Some people accept them with concerns or worries; others reject or delay certain vaccines and accept others; and others may reject them all. Reluctance is influenced by lack of confidence (in a vaccine or a particular provider), indifference (not perceiving the need for a vaccine), and convenience (access to vaccination).
To increase confidence in vaccines and minimize indifference and reluctance in the Region of the Americas, PAHO gives high priority to communication, advocacy and social mobilization.
The general guidelines proposed by PAHO aim to:
• Raise awareness of all parties involved about the importance of maternal and neonatal immunization.
• Promote trust in the vaccination schedule and in the safety and efficacy of vaccines.
• Curb rumors and incorrect information.
• Improbé vaccination coverage.
• Improve detection and reporting of possible suspected events attributable to vaccination or immunization.
